Dr. Nahed specializes in brain tumors including glioblastoma, low and high grade gliomas, metastatic brain tumors, and meningiomas. Dr. Nahed has a specialized focus on brain tumors in the language and motor areas and routinely performs awake surgery, language and motor mapping, and subcortical stimulation. Using intraoperative MRI, ultrasound, and brain mapping, Dr. Nahed strives to maximize the extent of resection while maintaining the best neurological outcome.
Using sophisticated MRI-based diffusion tensor imaging, Dr. Nahed and his colleagues study subcortical fibers tracts to plan a surgical approach, which is stimulated intraoperatively to confirm avoidance of the tracts and to test and preserve function. Dr. Nahed uses multi-modality intraoperative imaging and intraoperative brain mapping including intraoperative ultrasound to detect extent of resection of infiltrative brain tumors, and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging to accurately detect extent of resection in real-time using the ultrasound.
Dr. Nahed and his colleagues from the MGH Brain Tumor Board (neurosurgeons, neurooncologists, radiation oncologists, neuropathologists, and neuroradiologists) meet to review brain tumor cases to provide the most comprehensive, innovative, and novel therapy for patients with brain tumors. Dr. Nahed’s clinic is at the MGH Brain Tumor Center in the Yawkey building at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
